A Better Understanding of Heart Failure: This home study program is designed to assist health care professionals increase their knowledge of heart failure.  It is essential to review the anatomy and physiology of both the cardiovascular and respiratory systems in order to better understand the pathophysiology and both right and left sided heart failure.  This program will also cover treatment modalities and drug therapy used in treatment of heart failure.

Alzheimer's and Other Dementia: This home study is designed for health care professionals who wish to increase their knowledge about Alzheimer's and other dementias.  Dementia is one condition that strikes fear in probably more people even than heart disease, cancer, or any other disease.  The possibility of not only losing your memory, but in fact, losing your "self" is a frightening thought.  Can we prevent or reverse memory loss or dementia?  What causes the various forms of dementia.  Modern science is moving at a rapid pace to discover causes of dementia and why it occurs.  The problems associated with caring for the person with a dementia is ongoing and leads to many problems for heath care givers.  The cost of caring for the dementia patient is ongoing and is on the rise.

Arthritis: (Types, Causes, and Treatments: This home study program is designed to assist health care professonals to increase their knowledge about arthritis.  Arthritis is one of the most common maladies of our age, and is often a cause of terrible pain with little relief.  It is essential to clarify the different types of arthritis, their causes, the treatments and the long-term prognosis for each.

Autism Spectrum Disorders (Pervasive Developmental Disorders): Not until the middle of the 20th Century was there a name for a disorder that now appears to affect an estimated 3.4 out of every of every 1,000 children ages 3-10, a disorder that causes disruption in families and unfulfilled lives for many children.  In 1943 Dr. Leo Kanner of the Johns Hopkins Hospital studied a group of 11 children and introduced the lavel early infantile autism into the English language.  At the same time a German scientist, Dr. Hans Asperger, described a milder form of the disorder that became known as Asperger Syndrome,  Thus, these two disorders were described and are today listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-IV-TR(fourth edition, text revision) as two of the five pervasive disorders developmental disorders (PDD), more often referred to today as autism spectrum disorders (ASD).  All these disorders are characterized by varying degrees of impairment in communication skills, social interactions, and restricted, repetitive, stereotyped patterns of behavior.

Diabetes Mellitus: An Ongoing Epidemic (Pathophysiology, Statistics, and Incidence Among Various Ethnic Groups):  Diabetes Mellitus is one of the most devastating diseases in the United States.  Over the past century, it has increased until it has reaced epidemic proportions,  It is a very serious disease with devastating complications, for which there is no cure.  Much research is ongoing into the development of the different forms of diabetes and the treatment modalities for each.  This study is designed to assist the nurse in developing an appreciation for the implications of diabetes mellitus. 

Hypertension: The Silent Killer (Pathophysiology, Complications, Treatments):  The following home study discusses the normal anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system.  It discusses the patiophysiology of hypertension as well as its different classifications.  It will discuss the diagnostic criteria for hypertension, and will discuss the correct method for measuring blood pressure.  The reader will learn of the risk factors for hypertension and should be able to list the symptoms of hypertension.  The module will discuss special categories of persons with hypertension and discuss complications of it.  Finally the unit will mention the various categories of drugs used in the treatment of hypertension, method of action of each and side effects of the drugs.  It will list the special precautions used with antihypertensive medications.
