UNUSUAL LIFE THREATENING DISORDERS Home Study

This course is designed for RN's, LPN's

***UPDATED AND REVISED***
8 CONTACT HOURS

Not all patients suffering a life-threatening disorder are in the hospital, much less a critical care unit with all the necessary emergency equipment and trained personnel available. These situations can happen in your home, at a Little League game, in a car accident, with machinery in a factory, etc. You may be at any place at any time where some of these disorders occur. Some may occur in an accident, such as a traumatic amputation. Some may be the result of a medication a person has taken, such as anaphylaxis. Some may occur as an exacerbation of a chronic illness, such as status asthmaticus. Some may happen when you are in the delivery room, on a general medical-surgical floor or taking care of a child. It is important that the nurse be able to assess what is taking place and physically and emotionally support the patient during these situations. The pathophysiology of the condition as well as persons who are at high risk for the condition will be covered. The nursing care of the patient will be presented as well as symptoms that the condition is progressing to life-threatening status.
